Types of Colostomy

A temporary colostomy is created to divert stool while an area of bowel heals, with plans for later reversal surgery once healing is complete, while a permanent colostomy is used when normal bowel continuity can't be restored, such as after removal of the rectum. The stoma's location depends on which part of the bowel is affected and where diversion is needed.
