Why Colostomy Is Needed

Performed to divert stool through an opening in the abdomen when normal passage through the colon or rectum is disrupted, most commonly due to colorectal cancer, severe diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, traumatic bowel injury, or to protect a lower bowel reconnection while it heals. It can be temporary, to allow healing, or permanent, depending on the underlying condition and whether normal bowel function can later be restored.
