Use ABCDE: Asymmetry, irregular Borders, varied Colour, Diameter above 6 mm, and Evolution — any change in size, shape, colour, itching, or bleeding. Any evolving or "odd one out" lesion should be examined by a dermatologist.
Change reported by someone else is worth taking seriously, since you cannot easily monitor your own back. Photograph it for comparison and get it examined.
The 'ugly duckling' sign is useful — a lesion that looks clearly different from your other moles deserves attention even if it meets no other criteria.
