They're the earliest sign of gingivitis and shouldn't be ignored or treated as normal. Untreated, it can progress to periodontitis with bone and tooth loss, and it's associated with cardiovascular disease and worsened diabetes control.
Healthy gums do not bleed with normal brushing. Bleeding indicates inflammation, usually from plaque at the gum line.
Gingivitis is fully reversible with proper cleaning. Once it progresses to periodontitis with bone loss, the damage cannot be reversed — only halted.
