Spirometry

Spirometry is a non-invasive lung function test that measures how much air a person can inhale and exhale, and how quickly, to assess for obstructive or restrictive lung diseases. It is the primary diagnostic tool for conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and is also used to monitor disease progression and response to treatment. The patient breathes into a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer, which generates a graph of airflow that the physician interprets against predicted normal values based on age, height and sex. It is a quick, safe and widely used test in both diagnosis and ongoing management of respiratory conditions.
