Types of Cystectomy

Radical cystectomy removes the entire bladder along with nearby lymph nodes and, in men, the prostate and seminal vesicles, or in women, the uterus and part of the vagina, and can be performed as open surgery, laparoscopically, or with robotic assistance. Partial cystectomy removes only the cancerous portion in carefully selected cases. After bladder removal, surgeons create a urinary diversion — an ileal conduit, a continent cutaneous pouch, or a neobladder constructed from bowel tissue that allows near-normal voiding.
