Why Cystectomy Is Needed
Radical cystectomy is recommended chiefly for muscle-invasive bladder cancer or high-grade non-muscle-invasive tumors that keep recurring despite BCG therapy or TURBT. It is also used for extensive bladder tumors that cannot be controlled locally, certain congenital bladder abnormalities, or a severely damaged, non-functioning bladder from radiation, chronic infection, or interstitial cystitis.
Signs You May Need Cystectomy

Types of Cystectomy
Radical cystectomy removes the entire bladder along with nearby lymph nodes and, in men, the prostate and seminal vesicles, or in women, the uterus and part of the vagina, and can be performed as open surgery, laparoscopically, or with robotic assistance. Partial cystectomy removes only the cancerous portion in carefully selected cases. After bladder removal, surgeons create a urinary diversion — an ileal conduit, a continent cutaneous pouch, or a neobladder constructed from bowel tissue that allows near-normal voiding.
