The standard approach uses stereotactic frame-based or frameless neuronavigation to precisely implant thin electrodes into targets such as the subthalamic nucleus or globus pallidus, most often done with the patient partially awake (local anesthesia) so surgeons can test stimulation in real time. A separate procedure then implants a battery-powered pulse generator under the skin near the collarbone, and newer directional and rechargeable devices allow more precise, longer-lasting stimulation than earlier models.
