Why Cleft Lip & Palate Repair Is Needed

Performed to correct a congenital gap in the lip and/or roof of the mouth that occurs when facial structures don't fuse completely during early fetal development, the exact cause often being a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Surgery restores normal lip and palate anatomy, which is essential for feeding, speech development, and facial appearance.

Signs You May Need Cleft Lip & Palate Repair

The defect itself, a visible gap or split in the upper lip and/or an opening in the roof of the mouth connecting to the nasal cavity, is present from birth and usually diagnosed on prenatal ultrasound or immediately at delivery. Affected infants often struggle with feeding and may show nasal regurgitation of milk before repair.

Types of Cleft Lip & Palate Repair

Cleft lip repair is typically performed around 3-6 months of age, while cleft palate repair is generally done between 9-18 months to allow proper speech development, sometimes requiring additional revision surgeries later in childhood. Some children with more complex clefts need staged surgeries over several years, including later procedures for nose reshaping, dental alignment, or speech-related palate revisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age is cleft repair usually done?

Lip repair is typically done around 3-6 months and palate repair around 9-18 months, though exact timing depends on the child's health and the specific cleft type.

Will my child need more than one surgery?

Many children need additional revision surgeries over childhood and adolescence for optimal speech, dental alignment, and cosmetic results, as part of a staged, multidisciplinary treatment plan.

Will speech be normal after repair?

Most children develop normal or near-normal speech after timely repair, though some need speech therapy, especially if the palate was affected.

Is cleft lip and palate hereditary?

There's often a genetic component along with environmental factors, and having one affected child can slightly increase risk in future pregnancies, which a genetic counselor can discuss in detail.

How successful is the surgery?

Outcomes are generally very good with experienced cleft surgical teams, restoring good function and appearance, especially when repair and follow-up care are done at the right ages.
