Types of Ileal Resection

Segmental resection removes only the diseased section of ileum with reconnection (anastomosis) of the healthy remaining bowel ends, and is the standard approach when disease is localized. Laparoscopic ileal resection uses small incisions and a camera for a less invasive recovery in appropriately selected patients, while open resection through a larger abdominal incision is used for more extensive disease, significant scarring from previous surgery, or emergency situations.
