Types of Lymph Node Dissection

Sentinel lymph node biopsy removes only the first one or two nodes that drain the tumor site to check for spread, while complete (radical) lymph node dissection removes a larger group of nodes in a region such as the axilla, neck, or groin when cancer is confirmed in the sentinel nodes or is more extensive. The extent of dissection is tailored to the cancer type, location, and stage.
