Types of Ileal Conduit

The standard technique uses a short segment of the ileum (small intestine) as a conduit, connecting the ureters (from the kidneys) to one end and bringing the other end out through a small opening (stoma) on the abdominal wall where urine collects in an external pouch. Alternative urinary diversions, such as a continent cutaneous reservoir or an orthotopic neobladder, may be considered instead in appropriately selected patients who want to avoid an external bag.
