Why LASIK Eye Surgery Is Needed

LASIK is performed to correct refractive errors caused by an irregularly shaped cornea, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, so that light focuses properly on the retina. It is chosen by people who want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses once their vision has been stable for at least a year.

Signs You May Need LASIK Eye Surgery

Candidates typically experience blurred distance or near vision, eye strain, headaches from constantly adjusting focus, and frustration with glasses or contact lenses during daily activities or sports. A comprehensive eye exam confirming stable refractive error within treatable limits, adequate corneal thickness, and no active eye disease determines suitability.

Types of LASIK Eye Surgery

Standard LASIK creates a thin corneal flap with a microkeratome blade or femtosecond laser before reshaping the underlying tissue with an excimer laser. Bladeless all-laser LASIK uses only femtosecond lasers for the flap for added precision, while alternatives like PRK (no flap, surface reshaping) or SMILE (a small incision without a full flap) are used for patients with thinner corneas or higher-risk anatomy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LASIK a painful procedure?

The procedure itself is painless since numbing eye drops are used, though you may feel mild pressure during the laser treatment and some grittiness or light sensitivity for a day or two afterward.

How quickly will my vision improve?

Many patients notice significantly clearer vision within 24 hours, with vision continuing to stabilize and sharpen over the following one to two weeks.

Is LASIK permanent?

The corneal reshaping is permanent, but natural age-related changes like presbyopia after your 40s may still require reading glasses later, which is unrelated to the LASIK correction itself.

Who is not a good candidate for LASIK?

People with thin corneas, unstable prescriptions, severe dry eyes, keratoconus, or certain autoimmune conditions may not be suitable, so a detailed pre-surgery evaluation by an ophthalmologist is essential.

What are the risks of LASIK?

Serious complications are rare, but possible issues include dry eyes, glare or halos at night, under- or over-correction, and very rarely infection, all of which your eye surgeon will discuss before the procedure.
