Treatment options include antithyroid medications that reduce thyroid hormone production, radioactive iodine therapy that selectively destroys overactive thyroid tissue, and surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland in select cases. Beta-blockers are often used alongside definitive treatment to quickly control symptoms such as rapid heart rate and tremor while the underlying overactivity is being addressed.
