Treatment & Types of Sepsis in Karnataka
Sepsis is a medical emergency requiring immediate hospitalization with rapid administration of intravenous antibiotics targeting the underlying infection, along with aggressive fluid resuscitation to restore blood pressure. Supportive care in an intensive care unit, including vasopressor medications and organ support such as mechanical ventilation or dialysis, is often necessary for septic shock.
Sepsis is staged in three levels of increasing severity: sepsis, involving a dysregulated immune response to infection causing organ dysfunction; severe sepsis, an older term now generally merged into the sepsis definition itself; and septic shock, the most severe stage, involving dangerously low blood pressure that doesn't improve with fluids alone and requires medications to support blood pressure. It can also be classified by the source of the originating infection, such as pulmonary, urinary, abdominal, or skin-related sepsis, which helps guide the choice of antibiotics.
