Bacteria (Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli), viruses (norovirus), or preformed toxins. Most cases resolve in 1–3 days with fluids and rest. Seek care for bloody stools, high fever, signs of dehydration, or symptoms beyond three days.
Oral rehydration solution is the priority. Plain water alone does not replace sodium and potassium losses adequately.
Avoid anti-motility drugs like loperamide if there is blood in the stool or high fever, as they can worsen invasive bacterial infections.
