Why Pneumonectomy Is Needed

Pneumonectomy, removal of an entire lung, is performed for lung cancer that is centrally located or too extensive for a lobectomy to fully remove, as well as for severe, destructive lung disease from tuberculosis, fungal infection, or trauma that has irreversibly damaged the whole lung. It is considered a last-resort option when smaller resections cannot achieve complete disease removal.
