Types of Craniotomy

A standard open craniotomy removes a section of skull bone to access the brain, which is later replaced and secured, while a minimally invasive keyhole craniotomy uses a smaller opening for select, more localized procedures. An awake craniotomy, where the patient is kept conscious during part of the surgery, is used for tumors near critical speech or movement areas to allow real-time monitoring of brain function.
