Types of Emergency Craniotomy

Decompressive craniotomy removes a section of skull to relieve dangerous pressure from brain swelling, with the bone flap stored and later replaced (cranioplasty) once swelling subsides. Craniotomy for hematoma evacuation opens the skull to directly remove clotted blood compressing the brain, and in select cases minimally invasive or endoscopic techniques are used to evacuate smaller, well-localized clots.
