Types of Amputations

Amputation level is chosen based on how much tissue can be saved while removing all diseased tissue, ranging from below-knee and above-knee for lower limbs to below-elbow and above-elbow for upper limbs, as well as partial foot or hand amputations. A staged emergency (guillotine) amputation is used for severe infection, followed by a definitive closure amputation once infection is controlled.
