Types of Colectomy
A partial or segmental colectomy removes only the diseased portion of the colon, while a total colectomy removes the entire colon, often needed for extensive ulcerative colitis or certain hereditary cancer syndromes. The procedure can be performed laparoscopically with small incisions or through open surgery, depending on the extent of disease and any prior surgeries.
