Why Appendectomy Is Needed
Appendectomy is performed to treat acute appendicitis, where the appendix becomes inflamed and infected, usually due to a blockage from fecal matter, a foreign body, or swollen lymphatic tissue. Left untreated, an inflamed appendix can rupture, spilling infection into the abdominal cavity and causing life-threatening peritonitis.
