Causes of Epilepsy

Causes include genetic factors, brain injury from trauma, stroke, or infection, structural brain abnormalities, and certain developmental conditions, though in a significant proportion of cases no specific cause is ever identified. Prior severe head injury, brain infections such as meningitis or encephalitis, and stroke are among the more commonly identified causes in adults. Family history of epilepsy increases risk, reflecting a genetic contribution to susceptibility in many cases.
