What is Hyperthyroidism?
Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces and releases excessive amounts of thyroid hormone, causing the body's metabolic processes to speed up beyond normal levels. This overactivity affects nearly every organ system, leading to symptoms such as a rapid heart rate, weight loss despite normal or increased appetite, and heat intolerance, among others. The most common underlying cause is Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system produces antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland to overproduce hormone, though other causes such as thyroid nodules or inflammation of the thyroid gland can also lead to hyperthyroidism. If left untreated, prolonged hyperthyroidism can lead to significant complications including heart rhythm abnormalities, bone thinning, and, in rare severe cases, a life-threatening crisis called thyroid storm. A range of effective treatment options, including medication, radioactive iodine therapy, and surgery, can successfully control thyroid hormone levels in the vast majority of patients.

Causes of Hyperthyroidism
Most commonly caused by Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition in which antibodies stimulate the thyroid gland to overproduce hormone. Other causes include toxic nodular goitre, where one or more thyroid nodules independently produce excess hormone, and thyroiditis, an inflammation of the thyroid gland that can cause a temporary release of excess stored hormone. Excessive intake of thyroid hormone medication or, rarely, iodine-containing substances can also lead to hyperthyroidism in susceptible individuals.
