Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica most commonly results from a herniated or bulging disc in the lumbar spine pressing directly on a nerve root that feeds into the sciatic nerve. Other causes include spinal stenosis, which narrows the space around the nerve roots, bone spurs from spinal arthritis, and less commonly a condition called piriformis syndrome, in which a muscle in the buttock compresses the nerve. Risk factors include obesity, prolonged sitting, physically demanding occupations involving heavy lifting or twisting, and age-related degenerative changes in the spine.
