Endometrium-like tissue growing outside the uterus, causing inflammation, pain, and adhesions. It affects roughly 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, often takes years to diagnose, and can affect fertility. Treatment includes hormonal suppression, pain management, and laparoscopic surgery.
That combination is a classic presentation. Ultrasound can miss superficial disease, so a normal scan does not exclude it.
Treatment ranges from hormonal suppression to laparoscopic excision. Referral to a gynaecologist with an interest in endometriosis makes a substantial difference to outcomes.
