Why Portacaval Shunt Is Needed

A portacaval shunt is created to relieve portal hypertension, elevated pressure in the portal vein most commonly caused by liver cirrhosis, which can lead to dangerous complications like bleeding esophageal varices or fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites). It is considered when these complications cannot be adequately controlled with medications or less invasive procedures like endoscopic banding.
