Why Mediastinoscopy Is Needed

Mediastinoscopy is performed to investigate enlarged lymph nodes or a mass in the mediastinum, the central chest area between the lungs, most often to diagnose or stage lung cancer, lymphoma, or sarcoidosis. It is chosen when imaging like CT or PET scans shows an abnormality that needs a tissue sample for a definitive diagnosis before planning further treatment.
