Why Mastoid Surgery Is Needed

Mastoid surgery is performed to treat chronic or recurrent middle ear infections that have spread into the mastoid bone, a cholesteatoma (abnormal skin growth) eroding surrounding structures, or complications of ear infections such as hearing bone damage or the risk of infection spreading toward the brain. It is recommended when antibiotics and ear drops fail to control persistent infection or when structural damage is found on imaging.
