Why Laminectomy Is Needed

Laminectomy is recommended when the lamina and thickened ligaments narrow the spinal canal and press on the spinal cord or nerve roots, most often from spinal stenosis due to age-related degeneration, bulging or herniated discs, bone spurs, or a spinal tumor or fracture. It is also used when a herniated disc needs wider surgical access for removal.
