Why Hemicolectomy Is Needed

Hemicolectomy is performed to remove a diseased section of the colon, most commonly for colon cancer, but also for complications of diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease (like Crohn's), or a bowel obstruction that can't be resolved non-surgically. Removing the affected half of the colon, along with its blood supply and draining lymph nodes, both treats the disease and helps determine how far it has spread (in cancer cases).
