Why Atrial Septal Defect Surgery Is Needed

Performed to close a congenital hole between the heart's upper chambers that is large enough to cause significant left-to-right blood shunting, leading to extra strain on the heart and lungs over time. Surgery or catheter closure is recommended when the defect is large, causing symptoms, or risking long-term complications like pulmonary hypertension if left untreated.

Signs You May Need Atrial Septal Defect Surgery

Many small atrial septal defects are asymptomatic and found incidentally, but larger defects can cause shortness of breath with exertion, fatigue, frequent respiratory infections in children, irregular heartbeat, and poor growth in infants. Adults with long-standing untreated defects may develop signs of heart failure or arrhythmias.

Types of Atrial Septal Defect Surgery

Surgical closure through open-heart surgery uses a patch of the patient's own tissue or synthetic material to close the defect and is used for larger or complex defects. Transcatheter closure using a device delivered through a catheter from the groin is a less invasive alternative suitable for many defects with appropriate anatomy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every atrial septal defect need surgery?

No, small defects that aren't causing symptoms or heart strain may simply be monitored, while larger or symptomatic defects generally warrant closure.

Is catheter-based closure available instead of open surgery?

Yes, for suitable defect types and locations, a device closure via catheter avoids open-heart surgery altogether; your cardiologist will assess if you're a candidate.

What is the recovery like after surgical closure?

Recovery from open surgical closure typically takes 4-6 weeks, while catheter-based closure has a much shorter recovery of just a few days.

Can this be closed in adults, not just children?

Yes, these defects are often closed in adulthood too, sometimes when the condition is diagnosed later in life.

What is the long-term outlook after closure?

Outcomes are generally excellent, with most patients living a normal, active life after successful closure, especially when done before significant heart or lung damage develops.
