Types of Valve Repair / Replacement
Valve repair preserves the patient's own valve tissue when feasible and is generally preferred when possible, while valve replacement uses either a mechanical valve (durable but requiring lifelong blood thinners) or a biological/tissue valve (no long-term blood thinners needed but may wear out sooner). Minimally invasive and transcatheter approaches, such as TAVI for aortic valve replacement, are increasingly used as alternatives to open-heart surgery for suitable patients.
