Signs You May Need ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography)
Patients are typically referred for ERCP when they present with yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), dark urine and pale stools, severe upper abdominal pain radiating to the back, or fever with chills suggesting a bile duct infection (cholangitis). Abnormal liver function tests or imaging showing a dilated bile duct also commonly leads to this procedure.
