Chest tube drainage is needed when air, blood, or fluid accumulates in the pleural space around the lungs, commonly due to a collapsed lung (pneumothorax), traumatic chest injury, infection causing fluid buildup (pleural effusion or empyema), or after chest and heart surgery.
