Types of ACL Reconstruction
The graft used to rebuild the ligament can be autograft (the patient's own hamstring tendon, patellar tendon, or quadriceps tendon) or allograft (donor tissue), each with different trade-offs in strength, harvest-site pain, and recovery time. The reconstruction itself is almost always performed arthroscopically rather than through open surgery. Some surgeons also offer single-bundle versus double-bundle techniques depending on the pattern of ligament damage and the patient's activity level.
