No. The sound is gas bubbles collapsing in joint fluid. Studies have found no link to osteoarthritis, though very frequent cracking has been associated in some small studies with reduced grip strength and hand swelling.

The sound comes from cavitation — dissolved gas forming a bubble in the joint fluid as the capsule stretches. It takes about 20 minutes to be able to crack the same joint again while gas redissolves.
