Approved sweeteners are considered safe at typical intakes by regulators worldwide. Evidence is mixed on whether they help with long-term weight control, and some observational studies raise questions. They're generally a better choice than sugar for people with diabetes.
Acceptable daily intakes set by regulators have large safety margins, and typical consumption stays well below them.
For weight control, the evidence is mixed — they help when they genuinely replace sugar, less so when they justify extra intake elsewhere. Water, unsweetened tea and buttermilk remain the better default.
