Why Thoracoplasty Is Needed

Thoracoplasty is performed for chronic tuberculosis-related lung cavities or empyema (pus in the pleural space) that haven't healed with medical treatment, to collapse and obliterate infected space in the chest when the underlying lung cannot re-expand to fill it. It's far less common today due to effective antibiotics but is still used in specific complex chronic infection cases.
