What is Hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces and releases excessive amounts of thyroid hormone, causing the body's metabolic processes to speed up beyond normal levels. This overactivity affects nearly every organ system, leading to symptoms such as a rapid heart rate, weight loss despite normal or increased appetite, and heat intolerance, among others. The most common underlying cause is Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system produces antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland to overproduce hormone, though other causes such as thyroid nodules or inflammation of the thyroid gland can also lead to hyperthyroidism.
