Occasional use is generally fine. Regular NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac) risk stomach ulcers, kidney injury, and raised blood pressure; regular paracetamol is safer but dangerous in overdose, especially with alcohol or liver disease. Frequent painkiller use for headaches can cause medication-overuse headache.
Using acute painkillers more than 10-15 days a month can cause medication-overuse headache, where the treatment maintains the problem.
Frequent headaches deserve diagnosis rather than ongoing self-treatment — migraine and tension headache have specific preventive treatments.
