Why Polypectomy Is Needed

Polypectomy is performed to remove polyps, abnormal tissue growths found during a colonoscopy or upper endoscopy, that could potentially become cancerous over time if left in place, particularly adenomatous polyps in the colon. It is also done to relieve symptoms caused by larger polyps or to obtain tissue for diagnosis when a growth's nature is uncertain.

Signs You May Need Polypectomy

Many polyps cause no symptoms at all and are discovered incidentally during routine cancer-screening colonoscopy, which is why regular screening is so important. When symptoms do occur, they can include rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, changes in bowel habits, or abdominal pain, particularly with larger polyps.

Types of Polypectomy

Cold snare or hot snare polypectomy uses a wire loop passed through the endoscope to cut off the polyp, with or without electrical current to control bleeding, and is used for most small to medium polyps. Endoscopic mucosal resection is used for larger, flatter polyps, lifting the tissue with fluid injection before removal, while endoscopic submucosal dissection is reserved for even larger or more complex polyps requiring more precise, layer-by-layer removal.
