Standard whitening toothpastes are abrasive but within safe limits when used as directed. Overuse of highly abrasive or DIY methods like charcoal or baking soda scrubs can wear enamel, which does not regenerate.
Charcoal products are often highly abrasive and lack fluoride. Enamel does not regenerate, so abrasion is permanent.
Most surface staining from tea, coffee and tobacco responds to professional cleaning. Intrinsic discolouration needs supervised bleaching, not abrasive pastes.
