Why Parathyroid Surgery Is Needed
Parathyroid surgery is performed to treat hyperparathyroidism, where one or more of the small parathyroid glands become overactive, usually due to a benign adenoma, and release excess parathyroid hormone that raises blood calcium to unhealthy levels. Less commonly it is done for parathyroid cancer or gland enlargement caused by chronic kidney disease.
