Why Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Insertion Is Needed

This procedure is performed for patients with kidney failure who need dialysis and have chosen peritoneal dialysis, which uses the lining of the abdomen to filter waste, as their treatment method over hemodialysis. It is scheduled once a nephrologist determines the patient is a suitable candidate based on their kidney function, lifestyle, and abdominal anatomy.

Signs You May Need Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Insertion

The underlying indication is kidney failure itself, presenting with symptoms like severe fatigue, swelling in the legs and around the eyes, decreased urine output, nausea, and confusion as toxins build up in the blood. These symptoms prompt the nephrology team to plan dialysis access, including catheter placement, before waste buildup becomes dangerous.

Types of Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Insertion

Open surgical placement inserts the catheter through a small abdominal incision under direct vision, while laparoscopic placement uses a camera and smaller incisions for precise positioning with less discomfort. Percutaneous (bedside) placement, done with local anesthesia and imaging guidance, is a less invasive option suitable for select patients, chosen based on the patient's prior abdominal surgeries and overall health.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after catheter insertion can I start dialysis?

Typically, a healing period of about two weeks is recommended before using the catheter for dialysis, allowing the insertion site to heal properly and reduce the risk of leaks or infection.

Is peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion painful?

The procedure itself is done under anesthesia, so it is not painful, though some soreness and discomfort at the insertion site is normal for the first few days as it heals.

How do I care for the catheter site at home?

Keeping the exit site clean and dry, following your dialysis team's specific dressing instructions, and watching for signs of infection like redness or discharge are essential parts of home catheter care.

What are the risks of catheter insertion?

Risks include infection at the site or inside the abdomen (peritonitis), catheter blockage or displacement, and rarely bleeding, all of which your nephrology team monitors for during regular follow-up.

Can the catheter be removed if I switch to hemodialysis?

Yes, the peritoneal catheter can be removed in a simple procedure if you and your nephrologist decide to switch dialysis methods or after a successful kidney transplant.
