Why Mitral Valve Replacement Is Needed

This surgery is performed when the mitral valve is too damaged to repair, due to severe rheumatic heart disease, extensive calcification, infective endocarditis, or a failed prior repair, causing either significant narrowing (stenosis) or leakage (regurgitation) of the valve. It becomes necessary once the damaged valve substantially strains heart function and cannot be reliably fixed with repair techniques.

Signs You May Need Mitral Valve Replacement

Common symptoms include breathlessness on exertion or when lying down, fatigue, palpitations, swelling in the legs, and in advanced cases, coughing up blood or fainting spells. A distinctive heart murmur detected during examination often leads to the echocardiogram that confirms the diagnosis and severity of valve damage.

Types of Mitral Valve Replacement

Mechanical valve replacement uses a durable artificial valve that can last a lifetime but requires lifelong blood-thinning medication to prevent clot formation. Bioprosthetic (tissue) valve replacement, made from animal tissue, does not require lifelong blood thinners but may wear out over ten to fifteen years, and the choice between them depends on the patient's age, lifestyle, and ability to manage anticoagulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose a mechanical or tissue valve?

Mechanical valves last longer but need lifelong blood thinners, while tissue valves avoid this but may need replacement after a decade or more; your cardiac surgeon will help weigh this based on your age and health.

How long is recovery after mitral valve replacement?

Full recovery typically takes six to eight weeks, with initial hospital stay of about five to seven days and gradual return to normal activity guided by cardiac rehabilitation.

Will I need lifelong medication after this surgery?

If you receive a mechanical valve, yes, lifelong blood thinners like warfarin are required; with a tissue valve, blood thinners are usually needed only for a limited period after surgery.

Is there a non-surgical alternative to open valve replacement?

Transcatheter mitral valve procedures are emerging for select high-risk patients, though surgical replacement remains the standard, well-proven option for most patients, as your cardiologist can advise.

What is the long-term outlook after mitral valve replacement?

Most patients experience significant symptom relief and improved quality of life, with good long-term survival, especially when the procedure is done before the heart muscle is severely weakened.
