Why Tracheostomy Is Needed

Tracheostomy is performed when a patient needs a secure airway for prolonged mechanical ventilation, has an upper airway obstruction from tumors, severe swelling, or trauma, or has conditions causing chronic difficulty clearing secretions, such as certain neuromuscular diseases, that make normal breathing through the mouth or nose unsafe.
