Types of Upper GI Endoscopy (OGD)
Diagnostic endoscopy simply examines the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum and may include biopsies, while therapeutic endoscopy can treat conditions found during the same procedure, such as stopping active bleeding, removing polyps, or dilating a narrowed esophagus. Capsule endoscopy, using a swallowed camera pill, is a less common alternative used mainly for evaluating the small intestine beyond the reach of standard endoscopy.
