Types of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
The procedure can be done as an awake craniotomy, allowing the surgical team to test stimulation and monitor symptom response in real time during electrode placement, or under general anesthesia with imaging-guided targeting for patients unable to tolerate being awake. The implanted pulse generator is placed in the chest and connected to electrodes in the brain, with settings later adjusted externally without further surgery.
