Why Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT) Is Needed
Ordered to diagnose and evaluate chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary fibrosis, or to investigate unexplained breathlessness. It is also used pre-operatively to assess lung capacity before major surgery, and to monitor how well a patient is responding to respiratory treatment over time.

Common reasons for referral include chronic cough, wheezing, breathlessness on exertion or at rest, chest tightness, or reduced exercise tolerance. Patients with a history of smoking, occupational dust or chemical exposure, or known lung disease are also frequently tested to track disease progression.
Types of Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT)
Spirometry, measuring how much and how fast air moves in and out of the lungs, is the most common test, while lung volume measurement (plethysmography) assesses total lung capacity, and diffusion capacity testing (DLCO) evaluates how well oxygen passes into the blood. A bronchodilator reversibility test is often added to distinguish asthma from COPD.
